Speech On Raising Awareness Of Effects Of Litter On The Beaches

Pfp Jun | 17 Sep 2021, 2.50PM SGT

Good morning, everyone!

Before I start, I would like to know when was the last time you visited the beach? Was the beach filled with many filthy objects? And what do you think has caused all this rubbish to appear on the beach? My name is Boris, and today I would like to raise awareness of the negative impacts of litter on the beaches. I know this might sound boring, but please give me at least five to ten minutes of your precious time.

A few weeks ago, I visited a beach with my family members for a picnic. But to my horror, the beach was scattered with tons of rubbish such as plastic bags and bottles and many more. This made me feel uncomfortable and disgusted. So rather than complaining, I decided to volunteer in a community activity cleaning up a local beach.

A few things that surprised me about the type of litter I found was a set of television with remote control, a functioning light bulb, and a dislocated mannequin head. This made me wonder who the owners were, and why would they think of throwing these away here.

The reasons why litter causes problems for us humans and wildlife are because firstly, the beaches will be a disgusting place to visit anymore since it is filled with rubbish and bugs. Secondly, the birds and fishes may mistake the plastic for food and once consumed, they will choke on it and die. Additionally, they may also get stuck on the ropes and nets lying around on the beach.

So what can we as an individual do to mitigate the problem? First, before we leave the beach, we should ensure that our litter is cleared before leaving. Second, we can participate in cleaning-up events like what I have done recently. Third, we should raise more awareness on this issue by sharing this problem with our family members and friends.

If we still want a cleaner beach in the future, then we should all act together now. Togetherness is power. Thank you very much for listening, and have a good day ahead!
